New and nifty training accessories enhance autumnal runs

As the Central New York weather begins its inevitable turn toward fall, the air becomes crisper, the days become shorter and colorful leaves crunch under foot during daily runs.

A change of season is also a good time to evaluate your running accessories for cooler weather and an early sunset. Gloves, hats and compression leggings are some popular items runners will invest in for extra warmth. But Mandy Howard, a training coach at Fleet Feet Sports, says there are several new gadgets and training items that are worthwhile for runners.

“One thing I recommend for fall is making sure you are seen when you’re on evening runs,” Howard says. “That’s really important.”

Wearing a reflective vest, belt, tape or a head lamp can accomplish that goal. New at Fleet Feet is LightSpur ($20), an illuminating U-shaped band that is secured to the back of the running shoe. “It can be set for steady or flashing and can be taken on and off,” Howard says.

Battery-operated Knuckle Lights ($39.99 at Dick’s Sporting Goods) are another night-running-gear option. Worn on the hands, Knuckle Lights illuminate the path in front of you as you walk or run.

Running gear designed to hold or protect personal items is popular. The Shoe Pocket ($7.99 at Sports Authority) is a small, water-resistant pouch that attaches to any laced shoe. It’s big enough to store a key and money.

Howard says the FlipBelt ($25 at Fleet Feet) is one of her favorite gadgets. The one-piece belt is made of a machine-washable stretch fabric that is 3 inches wide. Runners can slip their phone, keys, money and more through the small opening, then flip the belt over to wear around the waist. Sizes range from extra small to extra large, and it comes in a variety of colors.

“It’s a good way to carry things when going out for a long run,” Howard says. “It stays in place, and nothing falls out.”

Although summer is a fading memory, sunglasses are still a must during sunny fall runs. For fashion and function, Oakley performance frames come in an array of colors and styles. The polarized Radar Edge ($180 at the Oakley Store at Destiny USA) introduced two new frame colors this fall: pink lava and orange flare.
