Below is the January 7th, 1971 edition of the Syracuse New Times. Richard Nixon is president. The Vietnam War wages on. George Harrison releases “My Sweet Lord”/Isn’t it a Pity” and later this year Janis Joplin releases “Me and Bobby McGee”. Andy Warhol leads the New York art world with his portrait commissions of celebrities and art films. The Syracuse New Times was just three years old –  founded in 1969 by publisher Ken Simon (a 21-year-old senior at Syracuse University). Simon called it the Orange Pennysaver and later re-named it the Campus Pennysaver – but by the summer 1970 it was officially the Syracuse New Times.
