Technology is evolving, but are we letting it get away from us? According to a new survey, twice as many high schoolers are using nicotine-based electronic cigarettes compared to a year ago. Nearly one in five high schoolers use e-cigs, and one in 20 middle schoolers, the Associated Press reported. While the electronic vaping pens originally boasted tasty flavor combinations and claimed to be safer than traditional cigarettes, there’s been little study on the long-term health effects or their effectiveness in helping people quit smoking. However, the survey also found that teen use of other drugs (traditional cigarettes, alcohol, heroin,…

The song has become a point of annual controversy as music lovers and historians debate the true meaning and connotations behind the lyrics. President Donald Trump faced major domestic and international backlash over canceling last Saturday’s visit to a World War I ceremony in France due to rain. In a statement, the White House said the appearance had to be canceled “due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather,” Reuters reported. The soggy weather meant the president’s helicopter could not be taken to the site, and there were security concerns in arranging a motorcade at the last minute. The White House later said there were also concerns about traffic complications, The Guardian stated. Criticism flew from all angles, including from former Defense…
After several mail bombs were sent to a hit list of Democrats across the U.S. and 11 Jewish people were shot and killed in a Pennsylvania synagogue, some are wondering whether there should be a domestic terrorism law on the books like there is for international terrorism. The absence of a clear-cut law leads prosecutors to go after a hodge-podge of other related charges and leaves no way to track trends in quantity or outcome, reported the Associated Press. People for the idea also say white supremacists and others who kill for ideology should “get the same terrorism label as…

Google announced Tuesday it would be shutting down its social network website Google+. The platform was launched in 2011 in an attempt to compete with Facebook, but ultimately failed, according to the BBC. The final nail was an expose by The Wall Street Journal detailing a large data breach from March that Google intentionally chose to keep secret, The Guardian reported. Nearly 500,000 accounts may have had private information exposed to hundreds of third-party sites — not unlike the scandal that happened with Facebook around the same time. Google assessed the breach and claimed it was not serious. Do you…

It has been 17 years since the 9/11 attacks, where nearly 3,000 people were killed and over 6,000 were injured in the United States after coordinated attacks by terrorist group al-Qaeda. Agencies around the country also hold memorial services to honor those that died and first-responders at Ground Zero in New York City. To honor the day, we at the Syracuse New Times want to see how many of our readers can recall that Tuesday in 2001, and if any…
